Statehood Quarters, New York 2023

The statehood quarters are a series of fifty circulatingcoins released by the United States Mint from 1999to 2008. The reverse side of each coin features a designthat commemorates the unique history, traditions, andsymbols of each state, and the series was released inthe same order that the states ratified the Constitutionor were admitted into the Union. It became the mostsuccessful numismatic program in US history, withroughly half the countrys population collecting thecoins. The words E Pluribus Unum are the onecommon element on each quarters reverse.

Hayward began the Statehood Quarters project in New York in July 2023 as he, like many others, had become increasingly concerned with the fractious state of politics. In their formal simplicity, Haywardsphotographs recall the official images published when
each coin was first mintedan effort to evoke thecommunal enthusiasm the original quarters generatedacross the country. But the coins are no longer pristine;they are worn, with scratches and edges softened bypassing through countless hands. Rather than tarnishesor flaws, these markings highlight a collective, shareduse and perhaps reveal opportunities for a commonunderstanding.
